ELC Program

Experiential Learning Component (ELC)
ELC provides children with tools and fundamentals to identify their passions, explore ways to believe in themselves and others, transform their passion into career possibilities, visit businesses and organizations in the community to learn more about their career interests, and write about their experiences.

ELC Program Details
ELC provides students with an alternate perspective on the world. The goal is to help these students to bridge between the younger generation’s world and the future professional world. The students share in team-building activities to help build trust, confidence and self-esteem. They then participate in site visits to local companies and organizations where they explore behind the scenes specifics of careers in their fields of interest. Students gain an understanding of what it takes to be successful. They also see what they are learning in school applies in the local community and the real world. After each site visit, students reflect on what they learned by writing about their experience.

The hope of ELC is not only to help these youth discover their own individuality and passions, but to gain a strong sense of confidence in their talents and differences. It is our believe that with a secure sense of self they are able to better function as individuals and in a group, ultimately helping them understand how to be better leaders and succeed in actual real-life school, work or family situations.

ELC starts with two team-building sessions, a critical step in creating a cohort and enabling the students to open up and share their passions and interests by building trust and self-confidence. During the Saturday Sessions, students discuss their goals and ambitions, build individuality, see their options for the future and foster teamwork and leadership. Between the two sessions, students put together art projects to demonstrate their individuality and their passions. At the concluding Saturday, the students name and claim their passions and receive input, accolades and support from their cohort.

Where is the program available?
This program was introduced as a pilot program for 6th and 7th graders at Madrona K-8 Public Middle School located in the Central District in Seattle, Washington. The pilot program has since transitioned to a sustainable program at Madrona. It is hoped to be expanded across the Seattle School District, and provide options for other school districts to learn about and implement the program.
